It takes a psycho to hate psychedelics…

January 9, 2008

Penalties against possession of a drug should not be more damaging to an individual than the use of the drug itself; and where they are, they should be changed.

– Jimmy Carter

What a novel idea! Maybe someday, when all the Puritan prigs that couldn’t handle their coffee and thus can’t imagine others handling stronger drugs, retire from the public arena, this will all be remedied.

I’m an optimist.

And if not, there’s always Amsterdam.

Until then, let the drug propaganda continue! Thank god for the human tendency for availability and confirmation bias. Where would we be without it!

Sorry about all the anger. I’ve been reading a book about a psychopharmacologist in the 60’s who, needless to say, lived under a lot less stringent narcotics laws. Amazingly, he didn’t die, become addicted, or otherwise fall into grave sin. And it makes me sad / angry that few will have the opportunities he had (or Huxley, or Leary, or any other number of luminaries that used ‘psychedelics’). Humans have been using mind altering drugs since the dawn of time. It’s kind of sad that the USA has decided on alcohol, possibly one of the most inane and least inspiring of the bunch, as the only one legal to produce, own, and ingest.
